Greetings Praying Friends,
So last Friday night RVA held it’s annual Jr./Sr. Banquet. It’s basically prom for our kids. The Juniors choose a theme, keep it secret, then transform Downing Hall into the Banquet that they put on for the Senior class. This year the Juniors chose the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, so changed the seating area into Narnia, including the entrance into the building transformed into the wardrobe.
The Sophomore class that I sponsor have big jobs at banquet. 30 of the Sophomores were chosen by the Juniors to be servers. The rest of the Sophomores scraped plates and washed all the dishes, pots, pans, etc. It was a bit of a late night, about 1:00 by the time I got home, but it was a good night.
Then, the next morning my Jr. High girls soccer team had an away game in at ISK. We left about 9:00 in the morning, drove into town, got hammered by the ISK girls 6-0. Oh well. When ISK came to RVA on Monday, we beat them 4-1, so . . .
We got back to RVA on Saturday afternoon, and there was a message on my answering machine from my boss, the principal of the school. “Hey Dan, give me a call when you get in. I need to let you know what’s going on.” Oh boy! So I call and he starts the conversation with “Do you have a couple minutes to talk?”. Big oh boy!
Turns out that one of our staff member families needed to leave to go back to the US for a family issue (please pray for this family), and they needed someone to cover his high school social studies classes. Fortunately he didn’t want me to cover them, he wanted my Jr. High social studies teacher to cover them. What he wanted me to cover was the Jr. High social studies classes. And, since that would give me too many lesson preps, he asked someone else to cover my Bible classes. So basically, for the next 4 weeks, until I leave for the US on furlough, I’m going to be teaching 7th grade World History and 8th grade US History. It’s going to be a lot of fun. In World History, we’re actually doing a unit on Islam, and since Kenya has a fairly large Muslim population, and some of my students families work in Muslim areas, it’s a topic that is very significant. US history is looking at the expansion of the US in the early 1800’s, with the Monroe Doctrine and Missouri Compromise, etc.
Well that’s about it. Here are a couple of prayer requests for you to lift to God on my behalf.
1. Pray for the family that is going through a tough time and had to go back to the US for a bit.
2. Pray for me as I step into this new teaching responsibility. Fortunately I know the kids from my Bible class, so classroom management isn’t a problem, but figuring out what to teach, when you only have a day or two heads up is difficult.
3. Pray for my furlough. Less than five weeks until I come back to the US for a couple of months. Pray for traveling mercies, and a great time re-connecting with family, friends, and supporters.
